Q:
A while ago some one posted a link to a web site that showed a tach installed
into a stock clock. it was a pretty cool setup, anyone have that info
   anymore?

I'm glad some of you are getting some useful info from my site.

-There was one available as an accessory. It was made by VDO, and went
in exactly where the clock is. I have owned one. It had the same mounting
clips as the T-3 clock. I do not remember if it had a 311 part number.
It may have been a ZVP or ZVW number.

-OK... Russ gets a definite Maybe!  I have no doubt that the dealer had
Availability to Tach's that would fit the hole if someone wanted one
(and had the $$) but Clips?  that gets further toward a Type 3 part but
I could see them being used as a universal application. I would say a
Z part number would qualify... so I guess the guessing goes on.
How many customers got these Russ?

-If I remember, I probably only put in a couple. Most VW customers back
in the '60's were only interested basic transportation. "Get me from
point "A" to point "B", the cheapest way possible." Not many put
accessories such as tach's in their cars.

-VDO made, marketed, and sold a version specifically for type 3s.
I believe it was made to exactly match the other type 3 instruments
which they also made and sold thru VW. I believe they had the exact
clips that were needed for a "proper" type 3 installation.
No way was this any kind of universal tach. Of course they made
and sold those also, but the type 3 ones were different.

I've no doubt that they did the same for other makes also, but
I don't remember seeing those in the ads. My mind just didn't
focus on them the same way.  ;-)

-There was also Type 34 tach, made by VDO to fit the dash hole with the
proper Type 34 clips. It also had a kind of dent in it so the wiper
   mechanism didn't collide with it.

-I had assumed that the type 34 clips were the same as the other type 3 clips.
   -- Jim Adney

-No. The Type 34 has L-shaped clips which are fastened by knurled nuts.
The clips are not an integral part of the instrument. Behind each
instrument there are two long threads onto which you slip the clips
and then screw them down with the nut. The clips go into a metal frame
   behind the dash.

      -- Daniel Baum

-They don't have VW numbers on them because they were not a factory part
(except for the type 34s.) They are not in the type 3 parts books or
microfiche (except for type 34s) Type 34s have a separate microfiche
for all those parts which are different from the other type 3s, so what
you have to do in a type 34 parts search is look for that part in the
type 34 book first and if you don't find it there you look in the general
type 3 book. There are no references to type 34s in the general type 3 book.

VDO changed their numeral styles several times. There are at least
2 different versions of black faced type 3 instruments. Is it possible
that the black faced tachs you've seen were of one style, while the
instruments you have are the other style?

None of these (except for type 34s) would have VW numbers on them because
they were never sold by VW. They were only sold by VDO for VWs. Dealers
could still buy them, but not from VW.
   -- Jim Adney

-Yes. They changed colour for the '66 model year from bronze to silver.
The Type 34 tach was not standard equipment, and, as far as I can see,
doesn't appear as a factory option in the parts book. Apparently it was
an aftermarket VDO tach in the same way as the Type 3 one was.

Into other instruments ~
-Also, (going back to an older thread) there was never a Type 34 speedo
with trip meter, not even as an option or after market replacement.
No one has ever seen one, AFAIK.
   -- Daniel Baum

A nice close-up of my clock face for those of you who have never seen Type 34
instruments in detail. This is a late-model, silver knob clock. The earlier ones
   had a bronze coloured knob.

-Here they are. These are '65 only. In the earlier models the speedo was the

same size as the clock and fuel gauge.

-This is a Gossen.  Nothing to do with Type 3's other than it will probably fit in the hole.
